About the British Wheel of Yoga

The British Wheel of Yoga is a registered charity and is the largest yoga organisation in the country, running for 40 years. It is members-based and organised into 11 regions.

We are also recognised by the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) and Sport England as the national Governing Body for Yoga in Great Britain. This recognition was not conferred automatically but was the result of a rigorous submission process lasting over a year during which other yoga organisations were considered. We represent the UK at the European Federation of National Yoga Organisations and are a leading member of the European Union of Yoga.

As the Governing Body, we accredit other yoga teacher training organisations. Find out more about BWY-accredited organisations.

With a nationwide network of 11 Regional Officers, almost 60 County Representatives and over 3,000 qualified teachers, we promote yoga classes, workshops and events for our members and the public.

We also offer a range of courses to enable our members to learn more about yoga and obtain professional qualifications; including a foundation course, teacher training diploma and post-training modules.

Child protection and equity are high on the BWY's agenda. We aim to ensure that children and young people are allowed to practise yoga free from abuse of any kind.

We are fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity for all BWY's employees, members and volunteers. We aim to ensure there is open access for all those who wish to participate in the practice of yoga and that they are treated fairly.

Aims of the BWY

  • To encourage and help all persons to a greater knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Yoga and its practice by provision of study, education and training
  • To maintain and improve the standard of teaching of yoga
  • To co-operate with and support other organisations having similar aims
