In May 2016, the National Executive Committee of BWY abolished initial registration and initial visit fees to make it easier for new Accredited Groups to join BWY. This amounts to a saving of £500. If you are interested in becoming an Accredited Group, please email Amanda who will guide you through the process.

BWY Accreditation offers status and authority to the qualification offered by Accredited Groups, and REPs recognition (Register of Exercise Professionals). BWY is the Sport England Governing Body for yoga, and has a reputation for excellence in its own teacher training Certificate and Diploma qualifications which are regulated by Ofqual.  Students who qualify via an Accredited Group will become BWY accredited teachers, benefitting from a market-leading insurance policy and many other benefits of BWY membership, including the quarterly magazine, Spectrum, Congress, training days and discounts on yoga equipment and free entry to the Om Yoga Shows.

Accreditation is offered to the equivalent of BWY-300 hour and BWY-500 hour levels. All teacher training courses must be conducted over a period of at least one year, although pre-course study and time to write up assignments can be included in this time period.

The Society of Yoga Practitioners (TSYP)

Since 2012, TSYP has been bringing together those UK teachers and therapists who continued to train with TKV Desikachar and his direct students. TSYP is led by an elected committee taken from among its Teacher Trainers and Teacher Members.

Our aims are:

  • The dissemination of Sri Desikachar’s authentic teachings, as he received them from his father Sri Krishnamacharya, as we received them from him and as they continue to be revealed through his immediate associates.
  • The application and adaptation of these received teachings to the individual and collective needs of those who wish to benefit from this singular tradition.

For this reason we maintain close links with the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram which was founded by Sri Desikachar in 1976 in honour of his father.

The backbone of TSYP is teaching and training; to both practice and teach all aspects of yoga, including Mantra, in the light of Sri Desikachar’s vision and tradition. Attend any of our activities – to be found on the Events Page of – ranging from teacher-training, through introductory courses, retreats, day seminars, 1:1 tuition and therapy and group classes, and you will always discover Sri Desikachar’s unique, specific and highly consistent approach to Yoga.
