Although their backgrounds and teaching experiences are varied they share a desire to make all yoga postures available to everyone. They consider four interesting asana using their approach of ‘The Journey Towards’. Through introducing a progressive set of stages they lead and guide students to a level that both challenges, yet respects, each individual’s ability. Between them they have close to 100 years of practice and experience that will be passed on in these sessions. Carolyn Clarke and Gillian GeeCarolyn Clarke is main Tutor and Education Manager of the BWY Approved Centre for Yoga – The Jasmine Trust. She has been privileged to teach yoga for over 30 years. She believes that there is always something new to learn, and stays the proverbial student. She finds joy in all aspects of practice and particularly likes to generate stability and exploration within practical techniques. As a ‘householder’, yoga student and teacher, Carolyn explores yoga as a tool to help in the life she has chosen to lead. Carolyn is a co-tutor with Gillian Gee of the Level 4 BWYQ Teachers Diploma.

A teacher since 1990, Gillian Gee has a keen interest in different yoga styles and has developed her practice from many different traditions, which are incorporated into her own teaching. She has completed the Pranayama Module and Yin Yoga Training and recognises the importance of good alignment, pelvic position, and the need for strength, not just flexibility in asana. She is a firm believer in the need for a positive mental attitude to life and yoga practice. Christine HowittChristine Howitt has been practising yoga for 25 years and teaching for 19. She initially trained within the Iyengar tradition but over the years has moved away from this approach to explore other methods of yoga. She has also spent many years studying and practising Chinese Medicine, which has enhanced her understanding of the body as an energetic system. Christine has been inspired and influenced by the work of Donna Farhi, whom she continues to study with, as well as regularly assisting Donna in Europe and on her Advanced Teacher Training Programme in New Zealand. Christine is known and respected for her instinctive approach to teaching. Her methods are adapted to suit each individual student she works with.

KrishnapremanandaKrishnapremananda has been a resident teacher at Mandala Yoga Ashram for several years, studying, serving and practising in that uniquely focused yoga environment. His understanding has been primarily shaped by three key influences: Swami Nishchalananda and the late Swami Neel Kamal, both of whom trained with the Bihar School of Yoga, and also Swami Anubhavananda, with whom he completed a year-long Vedanta training course in India in 2007. He regularly teaches in the ashram and around the country, helps direct the ashram’s yoga teacher training courses, and is currently training as a counsellor.

Lisa PetersenLisa Petersen is an international yoga teacher with over a decade of teaching experience. Lisa brings a blend of humour, passion, and a wealth of knowledge to her work. She offers workshops in Yoga Therapy, Somatic Movement Education, Developmental Movement and Embodied Anatomy. Since 2005 Lisa has been assisting and hosting world renowned author and teacher Donna Farhi. Lisa forms part of the Senior Teaching Faculty on Donna’s Teacher Training. Maarten VermaaseMaarten Vermaase studied Hatha Yoga with the late Robert Van Heeckeren, and Tibetan Buddhist Meditation and Yoga and Healing Exercises with Lamas and teachers from all traditions, most notably Kagyu and Nyingma. He has taught in the Oxford area and elsewhere since 1979, and holds workshops and retreats for groups nationwide. In 1999, at the suggestion of his teacher, Kenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, he started the Mahasiddha Yoga Group. He is a Diploma Cource Tutor for the BWY and tutors the BWY Meditation Module. The material presented during congress will focus on ‘effortlessness’ from the perspective of pranayama, Tibetan healing exercises and Shamatha meditation. Sessions can be taken individually or as a progressive sequence.

Mark SingletonMark Singleton has a Ph.D. in Divinity from the University of Cambridge. He has written extensively on yoga, notably the books Yoga in the Modern World, Contemporary Perspectives (the first ever collection of scholarship on modern yoga) and Yoga Body, The Origins of Modern Posture Practice, (which Yoga Journal said “should be on the reading list of every serious student and teacher training program”). A new collection, entitled Gurus of Modern Yoga, will appear with Oxford University Press next year. His current work focuses on the translation of early Sanskrit hatha yoga texts. He is a certified yoga teacher in the Iyengar and Satyananda traditions. He teaches at St. John’s College, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Alistair SHEARERAlistair Shearer has a degree in Indian Studies and Sanskrit and is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Society of Arts. He has published a number of books which offer a new appreciation of the wisdom of India including Effortless Being: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He is a teacher of Transcendental Meditation and the Perennial Philosophy. His lives in India for part of the year, and from this experience draws a deeper understanding of the meaning and significance of its myths, symbols and spiritual realities which are eternal and universal.

Andrea KWIATKOWSKIAndrea Kwiatkowski trained as a professional dancer and worked extensively around the world, where her interest in yoga and eastern philosophy began. She is a Diploma Course Tutor for the BWY, training teachers in Cambridgeshire. In 2005 she began her training in Jivamukti yoga in New York and is now an Advanced Certified Teacher in the method. This method of yoga means “liberated while living” and is about looking deeply at our lives on and off the mat and considering how we can make a difference in the world we live in. She feels blessed by her teachers, Sharon Gannon and David Life, and to be able to share these teachings of yoga. Andrea is also certified to teach Yin Yoga, studying with Sarah Powers since 2003, and Restorative Yoga, under the guidance of Judith Hanson Lasater.

Antonia BOYLEAntonia was initially self/book taught and the first teacher who inspired her to take up teaching was Iyengar trained. She wanted to go more deeply into philosophy and found her training with the Wheel provided a rounder education. Her specific focus now is to help yoga tutors be better communicators, so that their students can achieve their full potential in all aspects of yoga. She trained 17 years ago as a Master Practitioner NLP. She uses this training for one to one coaching work, training in industry, NHS and open courses.

Bill WOODA yoga teacher since 1994 Bill has been most inspired by Diane Long, a student of the late Vanda Scaravelli, with whom he has been studying since 1996. He has a long history of involvement in meditation and psychotherapy, both of which continually inform and inspire his approach to yoga in its broader sense. He has trained with Sophie Hoare and John Stirk and, in the mid-1990s, qualified as a Sivananda Yoga Teacher and as a Yoga Therapist with the Yoga Biomedical Trust. Bill teaches workshops all around the UK and has a psychotherapy practice, both within the NHS Mental Health Services in Devon and privately from his home near Totnes.

John STIRKHaving resolved several health issues through yoga in the early 1970’s John Stirk went on to teach remedial classes at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, and conducted body/mind workshops with R.D. Laing, with whom he studied for many years. Graduating as an osteopath in London in 1983 he lectured in bio-mechanics and practical osteopathy at the College of Osteopaths and was made a Fellow in 1995. John is the author of several books and teaches in the UK and internationally. John’s grounding in yoga, osteopathy and psychology has stimulated a continually evolving practice and teaching style that acknowledges Eastern and Western approaches to personal growth while giving space for insight and realisation to emerge.

Lesley DIKELesley Dike qualified as a BWY teacher in 1981 and has been teaching for 30 years. She qualified as a physiotherapist in 1992 and runs her own physiotherapy business called ‘Physio for Yoga’. Peter BLACKABYPeter Blackaby originally trained in Iyengar yoga at the beginning of the 1980’s but changed his approach after undertaking training in osteopathy and meeting Mary Stewart. He is interested in the anatomy of yoga, and more recently has become intrigued by the psychology of the body; how we embody emotions and feelings and how we habituate our history.

Wendy TEASDILLWendy Teasdill began her yoga practice with Pranayama in 1979 and went on to study Iyengar Yoga, the precision and attention to detail of which underpins her practice to this day. She has developed an asana practice which integrates pranic awareness and, often, sounds and mantra. Wendy is a Diploma Course Tutor and teaches the Pregnancy Yoga module for the British Wheel of Yoga. Her aim in teaching Yoga is to help people develop autonomy and confidence in their practice. She has published two books: Yoga for Pregnancy and Walking to the Mountain.
