A First Exploration of Ayurveda

AIMS
1. To introduce some key principles of ayurveda, including dosha, dhatu and mala
2. To outline the ayurvedic view of the body and its functions
3. To look at the qualities and effects of different types of foods
4. To provide a brief introduction to some of the ancient texts on ayurveda
OBJECTIVES – those who complete the course will/should be able to:
1.  Describe the key attributes of the three dosha (vata, pitta and kapha) and some of their effects/functions in the human body   
2. Assess their essential ayurvedic constitution (prakruti) using a suitable questionnaire or quiz.
3. Assess their current condition (vikruti) using a suitable questionnaire or quiz.
4. Appreciate that an individual’s vikruti may be affected by diet and lifestyle factors.
5. Keep a record of their dietary intake for one week and analyse their findings in terms of any likely effects on their doshic balance.
6. Identify foods that are likely to be helpful or unhelpful for maintaining their natural optimal balance of the doshas.

TEACHING MATERIAL USED ON THE COURSE.
Approx 20 pages in the course pack (including two worksheets and a food/drink diary) and an audio CD to highlight key points described the activities outlined in the written materials.
METHODS OF PRESENTING THE SUBJECT
The course pack includes information on historical background, key principles of ayurveda, the ayurvedic view of the body and its functions, the qualities and effects of foods and an introduction to some of the ancient texts on ayurveda.
Self-assessment of own prakruti and vikruti using ‘dosha questionnaires’ (instructions are given on how to download these documents from the website of The Ayurvedic Institute). This information is used to complete Worksheet 1.
Keeping a record of food and drink consumed for one week; using a table of food qualities/effects to analyse the likely effects of foods and drinks consumed on doshic balance; identifying any items that may be particularly helpful or unhelpful. This information is used to complete Worksheet 2.
The completed worksheets are sent to Tutor for comment/advice.

ABOUT THE TUTOR: FELICITY LEIGH
Felicity Leigh
Felicity had the wonderful good fortune of attending her first yoga classes while in the 6th Form at school. A few years later she was introduced by her BWY diploma course tutor to the teachings of Prof T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar and, since then this approach has been the main influence on her practice and teaching. She currently runs both Route 1 and Route 2 (Distance Learning) BWY diploma courses and is also a diploma course verifier. Felicity was the BWY County Rep for Greater Manchester for several years and she has served on the Education Committee since 2005. She also works as a pharmacist and a medical writer and is particularly interested in the therapeutic effects of yoga and Ayurveda. Felicity has a PhD. in pharmacology
OUTLINE PLAN FOR THE RUNNING OF THE COURSE
  1. You will Register and pay on line. Print out these two pages to keep track.
  2. Your Tutor will be informed through the web site that you have been registered and will receive confirmation of all your contact details which you have filled in on line at 1. above.
  3. Your Tutor will send you a welcome letter with all their own contact details (by email) confirming to you within a few days, unless away on holiday.
  4. At the same time, they will give you a date for when you can expect to receive your material. This may be within 2 weeks or six months depending upon the course start date you have chosen
  5. Confirm to your Tutor, when you receive your course material, and also contact by email or phone should you have any queries.
    There will be 2 CD’s. CD 1 will be the audio practice/information CD.
    CD2 will have the course material files on.
    You will download CD 2 onto your computer and print off to give you a clearer overall view
    Then you will work on screen for the material which is to be returned to your Tutor. 
  6. Begin your course.
  7. You will have all the dates for completion in the letter you have had at 4. Above.
  8. Follow the dates carefully and let your Tutor know, should there be any holdup due to health, life event etc.
  9. When you have returned all your material to your Tutor and your Tutor has returned the material back to you, with their comments, then confirm that you  have received it.
  10. Finally, to complete the course, you will go back on line into your membership number and your original password chosen when at 1. above. Bring up the course evaluation page and fill in on line.
  11. When you enter the completed Evaluation, you will only then be registered as completed and gain the 7.5  CPD points and receive your Certificate.
    So. Please make sure that you send the Evaluation, otherwise your Office record will not be ‘official’
  12. There will be an additional button on your course tabs which you can enter to pass any other comments about the course and also suggestions for future topics

The course is expected to take between 5 to 6 hours of your time, but you can take more if you want to. If you miss the completion dates without an agreed reason, then you may keep the material but not have a refund.
