Part 2 - The Axial Age : Samkhya and the Yogasutras

COURSE AIMS: To
1. Provide an opportunity to increase your understanding of historical setting of the Yogasutras through a course booklet and additional recommended reading.
2. Re-visit The Yogasutras and compare different modern translations.
3. Listen to the course audio-CD in preparation for two assignments
4. Complete two worksheets related to personal understanding and teaching aspects.
OBJECTIVES: by the end of the course you will be able to
1. Consider yoga practices which could be presented to students with emphasis on themes within the Yogasutras. (psychomotor)   
2. Read the four chapters of The Yogasutras with increased understanding (cognitive)
3. Consider selected Sanskrit terms and how they might influence your teaching. (cognitive and affective)
4. Consider the influence of Patanjali’s teachings on your own yoga practice and identify ways of supporting your students practice of meditation. (affective and cognitive)
5. Re-evaluate the significance of the Yogasutras in your life and teaching. (affective)

TEACHING MATERIAL USED ON THE COURSE
1.  A 18-page booklet written by Di Kendall giving background to the so-called Axial Age and the development of Samkhya darshana and The Yogasutras.
2.  An audio-CD with the voice of Di Kendall discussing the booklet and preparing for the course assignments. The CD may be returned at the end of the course or purchased.
3.  Two worksheets with explanatory notes, one related to personal understanding and the other related to teaching issues. 
4.  Tutor comments with feedback on course work and suggestions for further study.
ABOUT THE TUTOR: DIANA (DI) KENDALL
Diana (Di) Kendall
Di is a Distance Learning Diploma course tutor, a BWY Verifier and DCT. She has served as BWY Chair and Ed. Comm. Chair and Hon. Gen Secretary. During her term as Chair Di represented the Wheel in the European Union and served as their Secretary General as EUFNY worked towards devising the common European Teacher Training Programme, still in use today. Back home she headed the team which negotiated the award of Yoga Governing Body to The Wheel, and in 2004 co-designed the BWY module, The Spiritual Heritage of Yoga and follow-on Distance Learning In-service Training Courses on Yogic Philosophies. Di teaches weekly classes in North Yorkshire and remedial yoga to students with special needs.
OUTLINE PLAN FOR THE RUNNING OF THE COURSE
  1. You will Register and pay on line. Print out these two pages to keep track.
  2. Your Tutor will be informed through the web site that you have been registered and will receive confirmation of all your contact details which you have filled in on line at 1. above.
  3. Your Tutor will send you a welcome letter with all their own contact details (by email) confirming to you within a few days, unless away on holiday.
  4. At the same time, they will give you a date for when you can expect to receive your material. This may be within 2 weeks or six months depending upon the course start date you have chosen
  5. Confirm to your Tutor, when you receive your course material, and also contact by email or phone should you have any queries. Note the allocated Course number.
  6. Begin your course.
  7. You will have all the dates for completion in the letter you have had at 4. Above.
  8. Follow the dates carefully and let your Tutor know, should there be any holdup due to health, life event etc.
  9. When you have returned your completed worksheets  to your Tutor and your Tutor has responded with her feedback comments go on to 11 below.
  10. Finally, to complete the course, you will go back on line into your membership number and your original password chosen when at 1. above. Bring up the course evaluation page and fill in on line.
  11. When you enter the completed Evaluation, you will only then be registered as Completed to gain the 7.5  CPD points and receive your Certificate.
    So - please make sure that you send the Evaluation, otherwise your CPD points may not be recorded.
  12. There will be an additional button on your course tabs which you can enter to pass any other comments about the course and also suggestions for future topics
The course is expected to take up to 6 hours of your time, but you may find you spend more time on your reading before completing the two worksheets. If you miss the completion dates without an agreed reason, then you may keep the material but not have a refund.
