How to Choose a Topic and Enroll on a Distance Learning IST Course

Read here the list of the Current Topics.

The bookable period is between January to May. The topics may be repeated two or three times in that period. The web site will have the booking open on Friday 8th January

Each topic date has five places. You will be able to see how many places may be left.
When you see a topic of interest to you in the précis list, go to the individual Tutor’s information, which has further  details about themselves and the content of their courses.

The cost for all courses is £45 .00 which includes £5.00 to the office

Follow the booking instructions.  When you have paid for the course, then your Tutor will be informed that you have booked by your contact details automatically going to them.  Your Tutor will then email you, confirming they know that you have booked and with some more information.

The time it takes for you to do the course. There is a good space of time for you to complete the course but within that time, you are only expected to take 5 or 6 hours of study.

Pam is the BWY Distance Learning Tutor, designing the Foundation and past Diploma material and now advising on parity of material in these DL in-service/on-going training courses. She has been attending Education committee meetings for many years, producing information and training courses for the BWY. She is a Diploma course verifier, has a Cert Ed, 5 certificates from the National Coaching Foundation and runs a wide range of IST days. Self Assesment and checking your teaching: Support and Advice
You would have yourself filmed teaching your normal class. Then send the DVD to your Tutor. Information on what to film and how is included in the initial pack. There is an audio CD which comes with the pack. There is no pass or fail, just a peer exchange of information and reflection should you feel the need for a 'refresher'.

TADASANA: Self Assessment
You will need a digital camera. Along with the Audio CD for you to try various standing alignments, there will be information on the spine.
You have photos before and after and views from front side and back. You will be able to make some adjustments and your Tutor will give you further advice.
This is one of the most difficult asanas to look ’right’ in and by the end of the course you will have developed a good eye for aligning yourself and your classes.

Surya Namaskar Salutes To The Sun For The Less Able: Self assessment and modifications
There are two Routines on the Audio CD, one seated, and one kneeling.
Plus preparatory exercises. You will also be able to comment on the material and add ideas of your own. In the past some teachers have tried the routines out on their class and got very useful feed back to use during the course

Mudra and Bandhas: The Three Bandhas for Maha Mudra
Non stop practice from the CD with many variations and counter movements and breathing ratios. Suitable for the physically adept to progress to Maha Mudra but with simple introductory routines first, on how beginners may physically locate the muscle groups. Check lists on progress and comments.

Ujjayi Personal Practice And How To Teach Your Classes With Success
Various approaches to personal practice and a variety of applications for Ujjayi.
There is an audio transcript with suggestions of how to introduce and develop and the opportunity to try out on your usual class and write about it, also giving any further comments with suggestions based on past and present experience.

Di is a Distance Learning Diploma course tutor, a BWY Verifier and DCT. She has served as BWY Chair and Ed. Comm. Chair and Hon. Gen Secretary. During her term as Chair Di represented the Wheel in the European Union and served as their Secretary General as EUFNY worked towards devising the common European Teacher Training Programme, still in use today. Back home she headed the team which negotiated the award of Yoga Governing Body to The Wheel, and in 2004 co-designed the BWY module, The Spiritual Heritage of Yoga and follow-on Distance Learning In-service Training Courses on Yogic Philosophies. Di teaches weekly classes in North Yorkshire and remedial yoga to students with special needs.

Margaret began yoga in the 1970s gaining her BWY diploma in 1982. She is a DCT running Distance Learning Diploma and IST courses for the Wheel. She spent time in India at the KYM with Desikachar and has worked with him on his visits to England. She was greatly influenced and encouraged by the late John Davies. She has a love of pranayama, which was instigated and encouraged by Paul Harvey during her time on his 4 year Practitioner course.

Preliminary Pranayama
This first of two courses is designed to prepare for pranayama practice by using the breath in asana with both sound and ratios which extend the exhalation. There are two practices to complete and comment on and some reading around what the ancient texts tell us about pranayama with a questionnaire to complete and further reading suggested.
There is an introduction to the course on a CD with a metronome sound included to help with timing and counting.

The Viniyoga of Pranayama
In the second course there are two practice sessions; firstly using sound in asana and secondly to prepare for the practice of Anuloma Ujjayi pranayama, with your comments on the practice required.
There is some reading around what the modern yoga masters tell us about the practice of pranayama with a questionnaire to complete and further reading is suggested. Some precautions and prohibitions are given for both courses. There is an introduction to the course on a C.D.

Planning a Vinyasa for Self and Class
In this course guidance is given on planning a vinyasa using a number of postures in a given format. You are talked through the first practice on the CD, which also includes an introduction. There are two more practices for you to complete using different postures. You are then asked to plan a vinyasa yourself using three more postures using the given format. Details of postures with preparation, variations and modifications are also provided.

Felicity had the wonderful good fortune of attending her first yoga classes while in the 6th Form at school. A few years later she was introduced by her BWY diploma course tutor to the teachings of Prof T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar and, since then this approach has been the main influence on her practice and teaching. She currently runs both Route 1 and Route 2 (Distance Learning) BWY diploma courses and is also a diploma course verifier. Felicity was the BWY County Rep for Greater Manchester for several years and she has served on the Education Committee since 2005. A First Exploration of Ayurveda
Yoga and Ayurveda are closely related disciplines that are rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. This course is intended for students with little or no prior knowledge of ayurveda and it includes an introduction to some of the classical Sanskrit texts on this subject and an exploration of some basic principles and concepts through a course booklet and audio CD. There will also be two worksheets for you to complete, related to constitutional assessment and dietary habits and preferences.

Ayurveda and Yoga Practice
In this course you will use ayurvedic principles to evaluate and refine your personal yoga practice and teaching. The course work will include keeping a record of your current practice, analyzing your observations and then exploring ways that you could develop your practice to better support your ayurvedic constitution. You will also be encouraged to consider how you could use ayurvedic principles to develop effective and enjoyable practices for your students. The course materials will include a booklet, an audio CD, a practice diary template and two worksheets on which to record your observations and practice plans.
(N.B. Although the course is intended for students with some prior knowledge of Ayurveda - and specifically of the constitutional characteristics associated with the three doshas - suggestions for background reading will be offered in the course booklet.) (NEW)

Tabitha has over 12 years teaching experience with yoga. She has been a BWY Diploma Course tutor since 2001 and has served 3 years in the BWY Education Committee as NISTO (BWY In-Service Training Officer). Prior to investing deeply in yoga training and study she was a research scientist (with an Honours Degree in Chemical Physics at Edinburgh University) and in 1998 she obtained a PGCE in Secondary Science from De Montfort University. Introducing Chakras
This course aims to give you seeds of ideas for introducing chakra concepts into a yoga class in the hope that this will stimulate you to develop your own approaches. The course consists of three parts: practice and reflection on some different approaches to Tadasana; a guided internet research of when and how to adapt practice to emphasize a particular chakra; and a feather-and-chakra contemplation practice. The course pack will include two audio CDs (one to guide you through the different Tadasana approaches and one to guide you through the feather-and-chakra contemplation) plus a CDrom of course notes – all of which will be yours to keep (regardless of whether you complete the course or not).
Please note that this course does require you to have internet access.

ALL THE COURSES COUNT AS 7.5 POINTS
  • These courses are open to all teacher members of the BWY. All members must access to a PC or laptop and have an email address and printer, to enable good communications with their  Tutor.  All course material is provided on CD.
  • There are a maximum of 5 people on each course.
  • All courses have a specially produced audio CD.
  • The amount of written materials supplied for each course is of a similar quantity.
  • Each course will take between 5 to 6 hours for you to complete.
  • You do a course evaluation at the end.
  • These courses are monitored as to student satisfaction, just as in a face to face course.
  • The courses are designed for various levels of subject knowledge / experience.
  • The Tutors meet up to compare their course material level.
  • There are 2 CDs posted to you. One is an audio CD for you to follow. The second CD has on it all the course material. This second CD is for you to load onto your PC. This is the most reliable way. It means that you can work directly on screen where information is asked for and attach back to your Tutor, who in turn attaches their comments/advice back to you. You will need to print it all off first, so that you can get the full picture, otherwise you will lose the thread.
  • Your Tutor will let you know whether you need to use a book.

The Courses asking for photographs will necessitate you having a digital camera. We hope that these courses will provide an enjoyable and rewarding option for those of you finding difficulties in fulfilling your ongoing training requirements.
