When I first came across yoga at the age of 20 I was deeply moved, not
so much by the discipline that kept my body in good shape but by the
realisation that yoga can open a door to a new world of understanding
and experience. I had studied philosophy and found it a mere
intellectual exercise, like reading a travel brochure, but in yoga I
found a way of actually going to the foreign places. Yoga can bring
insight and transformation to your whole being if taught with a deeper
understanding of Indian philosophy. However not much insight or
transformation will occur if yoga is only practiced and taught as muscle
stretching. As a teacher of 17 years, and running my 4th diploma
course, I have tried to refine my approach to the deeper meaning of yoga
philosophy on the mat.
