Spectrum article: Autumn 2008
There are only a few safeguarding procedures for such a situation, but they are important and need to be noted:
1. You do NOT need to hold a current Enhanced Disclosure for such a ‘one-off’ BUT the teacher/leader/helper must remain with the group at all times. (It is best to think of them as being in charge and yourself as primarily a demonstrator, particularly if any issues of discipline arise.)
2. Ensure you will not be left on your own with a child or children whilst making your visit.
3. Check what the CP procedures are for the organisation should you use hands-on adjustment in your teaching. (You may want to reflect on whether adjustment is actually necessary for a “taster” session.)
4. Check what size group you will be teaching, bearing in mind that the size of the group affects the quality of a child’s experience of what may be for them a totally new subject, plus the implications of space and safety.
There are couple of other points that are also worth bearing in mind (with apologies to those of you who have worked in schools or had to deal with groups of errant teenagers!)
Teachers in primary schools particularly often have very little ‘non-contact’ time so a few moments’ opportunity to catch up on admin can be a godsend – don’t let that be at your expense. A diplomatic way to ensure their presence might be to mention potential difficulties with insurance (which also happens to be true).
It is always worth bearing in mind that schools and other children’s organisations often appear very easy-going and relaxed because the youngsters know exactly who is in charge. If the main source of authority or discipline leaves the room the children may well test you out however lovely they initially appear. There are more than just legal reasons for sticking with the status quo!
Just as a reminder about the checklist printed in Winter 2007 Spectrum for those of you intending to offer dedicated children’s classes (ie hiring or using your own venue and advertising for students), teachers offering yoga at a school, health centre, and for those of you to teaching an adult class when an under-18 year-old wishes to attend. The checklist can also be downloaded from the website - www.bwy.org.uk About The Wheel/Child Protection and Equity.
As always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish to. I have recently changed my email address to: cpandequity@bwy.org.uk
Best wishes with your teaching.
