INDEPENDENT SAFEGUARDING AUTHORITY and VETTING & BARRING SCHEME
Update – June 2010

Many of you may have heard about the ISA, a body set up in October 2009 in
accordance with the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006. It was intended that
from November 2010, in a phased introduction, all those working with children or
vulnerable adults would be required by law to register with the ISA, as well as
undergo CRB checks.

This month, the government announced that it was suspending the scheme and
would hold a review on its terms of reference. There is as yet no news as to which
elements of the original scheme are to be retained and which are to be scrapped.

When we have concrete news on how any future system will affect BWY teachers,
we will let you know. In the meantime please note the requirement to hold a
current and valid CRB check in accordance with the BWY Child Protection
Policy remains unchanged.
