7 Term Sanskrit Course for Yoga Practitioners

Estimated 2 minute read time.

A new ‘7 Term Sanskrit Course for Yoga Practitioners’.

We are pleased to announce a new Sanskrit course for Yoga practitioners. It has been especially designed by Sanskrit @ StJamesbased on our considerable experience of teaching children and adults. The course runs for 7 terms of 10 – 12 weeks each, and starts at the beginning with the alphabet, progressing step-by-step to IGCSE® level. The examination itself is optional but highly recommended both as a means of focussing study and gaining an internationally recognised qualification.

Weekly online classes, of 11/2hours each, will consist of one hour language and literature study followed by a short break, then oral practice in small break-out groups. Precise pronunciation of Sanskrit is essential in revealing the inherent beauty and subtle meaning of the language. Oral practice will embrace the chanting of Vedic prayers and verses from the Bhagavad Gita, as well as pronunciation of traditional terms including those relevant to yoga theory and practice. The main teacher and the tutors who will help with the break-out groups are highly experienced and are all qualified at this level or above.

During the course participants will learn to read and translate simple stories adapted from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. These stories provide a window into the great epics and, together with the study of extracts from the original texts of the Bhagavad Gita and Hitopadesha, help to deepen the understanding of Sanskrit philosophy, culture, and society.

This course will significantly enhance the ability to study texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Upanishads with accuracy, ease, and confidence, and in the case of teachers, it will support and enrich their Yoga teaching. Our courses enable authenticity of practice and experience of depth.

The fee for the whole course is £360. Some study materials are free and any that need to be purchased are very reasonably priced.

The course provider,Sanskrit @ St James, is a charitable body, part of Independent Educational Association Limited. Ourprincipal aims are to communicate the benefits of studying the Sanskrit language, to develop teaching and learning materials and to promote public Sanskrit examinations worldwide.
