About Mary Mackie

I am qualified as a yoga therapist with the yoga biomedical trust.  As a trained nurse I was always interested in making yoga accessible to many people with a range of ‘conditions’ and limitations.  I use chairs to both enable and in some cases enhance yoga practice. I have taught in varying settings including a care home for the elderly blind – challenging and also great fun. I look forward to sharing the endless possibilities of chair yoga with you.

Morning Session

A complete chair based practice for the less able and elderly based on the 8 limbs of yoga.  Students will develop their knowledge of common conditions to be found in an ageing population. E.g.: osteoporosis; arthritis; Parkinson’s’; lung disease; cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes; also hip and knee replacement, also Including an understanding of chronic disabilities such as multiple sclerosis and conditions of the back. (this is a non-exhaustive list which will be covered within the workshops)

Learning Outcomes

1.       Be aware of the types of limitations of the less able or elderly student and ways in which chair based   yoga can enhance physical and mental well-being.

2.       Experience a chair based yoga practice for themselves

3.       Be aware of different sensations that come from a chair based practice as opposed to a floor based   practice.

Afternoon Session

Sharing of ideas in a workshop setting of how to build a flowing chair based practice to enhance and enable yoga for the less able or elderly.

Learning Outcomes

1.       Consider how to teach less able or elderly students using chairs/props.

2.       Consider the changing needs of an ageing general class and how you can help them to maintain their health and well-being through yoga in class at home and off the mat- activities of daily living.

3.       Develop a flowing sequence based around chairs / props in pairs and teach to peer group.

4.       Consider attitudes towards the ageing and less able population and how you could ensure inclusivity in a general class.

This day is interactive and practical.

You will need your usual yoga equipment plus any props that you have such as blocks, blankets, straps, stretchy bands, 7” soft-exercise balls, golf ball, tennis ball.
