Anna Semlyen BWY Dip is the British Wheel of Yoga Specialist Advisor in Back Care and Therapeutic Research and co-author of Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs book and relaxations CD with Alison Trewhela. She was also yoga consultant on the biggest yoga research in the UK – a pragmatic multi-centred randomised controlled trial of yoga for chronic low back pain, run by Trials Unit at the University of York and funded by Arthritis Research UK. Itinerary for the Day
Arrivals, welcomes, names/introductions. Discuss concerns with anyone who has a back or other health problem. Venue, fire and toilet procedures.
Go through trial published papers from the Annals of Internal Medicine and health economics published in Spine. Explain background to the trial and results including how sequences were devised, research methods, recruitment, inclusion and exclusion criteria and results from the York Trial. Discussion of themes used for the 12 class plans. Questions and answers on medical research and yoga
Practical teaching of Pain Relieving Postures in the Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs course. Demonstration and asana practice as if participants were experiencing back pain.

THE AFTERNOON SESSION
Questions and answers on Pain Relieving Postures
Spinal anatomy. Brainstorm on causes of low back pain . Definitions and prevalence of low back pain. A few precautions on diagnosis. Exclusion of those with symptoms of serious spinal pathology eg pain down both legs,
Practical demonstration and asana practice of the CORE SEQUENCE A with theme of steadiness (as week 2 lesson plan in the trial).
Continue with CORE A introducing variations of postures used throughout the 12 week course
Relaxation either live or with track 2 of the Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs CD by Anna Semlyen.

Bring your yoga equipment (mat, block, blanket, belt and a pillow is optional) and your lunch. Wear warm clothes as work often involves lying down with supports, so this is a therapeutic, and not warming course. The course is aimed at all levels of ability, but you must be able to get off the floor unaided.
