Aims of the Morning
1. Present and then discuss three translations of Patanjali's
yoga sutra 2.18
2. Expand upon the Gunas with the use of questionnaires and handouts.
3 For Rajas I will facilitate a brainstorm on what yoga tools (such as asana,
pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation, affirmation, relaxation) could help move
towards sattva, or sustain a sattvic state.
Objectives
1 To have compared three translations of Patanjali's sutra 2.18
on the Gunas
2. For participants to have considered the balance of the Gunas in their lives
and which Guna most often affects them
3. To have considered, and practiced, hatha yoga postures, breathing,
meditation and relaxation practices to overcome Rajas and move towards Sattva.
To consider the effects that the practices have on themselves and whether they
work
Aims of the Afternoon
1 For each of Tamas and Sattva, I will facilitate a brainstorm
on what yoga tools (such as asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation,
affirmation, relaxation) could help move towards sattva, or sustain a sattvic
state
2. Taking each Guna at a time, I will teach a practical lesson with appropriate
hatha yoga practices to mitigate the Gunas of Tamas and Rajas and sustain
Sattva
Objectives
1. To have considered, and practiced, hatha yoga postures,
breathing, meditation and relaxation practices to overcome Tamas and move
towards Sattva or to sustain Sattva. To consider the effects that the practices
have on themselves and whether they work
2 To learn lifestyle/life coaching advice to help students recognise and overcome
the Gunas of Tamas and Rajas
3 To apply knowledge of the Gunas to teaching general yoga classes

Methods of presenting the subject
One day training in the yoga for peaceful mental health. Using
questionnaires on the three gunas to diagnose our mind state we will then work
out which yoga techniques including asanas, breathing practices, meditation and
relaxation methods, plus what general approach to practice is most likely to
induce a sattvic (harmonious) state of mind
Subject is presented through definitions, quotes, brainstorming, question and
answers, handouts of postures, demonstration of practices as well as actually
doing postures, breath work, mantra, affirmation, meditation and relaxation,
plus pairs work.
About the Tutor
Anna Semlyen (York, North Yorkshire Y010 4BH) began yoga in
1990, has been teaching since 1996. She qualified with BWY in 1999. Co-Author
of Yoga For Healthy Lower Backs (Lotus Press) and Relaxations CD (www.yogaforbacks.co.uk). BWY Specialist Advisor on Back
Care and Therapeutic research.
Anna has published yoga research as a treatment for low back pain with the
University of York\'s Health Sciences Dept proving a 30% benefit of specialist
yoga over usual GP care in one of the top five medical journals - Annals of
Internal Medicine (http://annals.org/content/155/9/569.full.pdf+html) and in
the Journal Spine showing how specialist yoga is cost effective due to 8.5
fewer days off work. There are three other related scientific publications.
Anna is a partner in the www.yogaforbacks.co.uk Institute with Alison Trewhela,
which has over 400 trained teachers in back care yoga.
She teaches weekly classes in Yoga In York (www.yogainyork.co.uk) plus private lessons. She tutored at
BWY Congress on Yoga and Dosha and the Seasons, the Gunas, Self Confidence and
Energy.
Anna Semlyen has BWY Dip, BA (Oxon) MSc in Health Economics, Ayurveda
Foundations Dip, Reiki 2. Fully CRB checked.

1. The event organiser will offer to transfer a person to another event which is on the BWY website.

If this is not possible the event organiser will follow the BWY cancellation policy: • Within 2 months of the event a full refund can be made • Between 8 weeks and 4 weeks prior to the event 50% of the fee (a full refund can be made if there is a waiting list for the event) • 1 month to 1 week – 25% of fee paid • 7 days’ notice no refund.
3. The event organiser will ask the Treasurer to refund the person by BACS – cheque refunds will only be given in exceptional circumstances.
