Main Aims:

  • To train yoga teachers to positively support women during and after menopause;
  • To Educate and Empower women to Embrace menopause as an opportunity for Swadhyaya self-study and personal growth;
  • To raise awareness of Menopause in the yoga community and how yoga, pranayama, meditation and other complementary techniques can transform women’s lives.
The Course:

Learn how to support women as they transition through menopause with this NEW three-day teacher training module in Menopause Yoga& Wellbeing.

This is the BWY’s first TT Module specialising in yoga for Menopause and is led by Petra Coveney who is an experienced BWY teacher, in London, with more than 500 hours of teacher training. She is also a member of the British Menopause Society (BMS) for medical and health practitioners and works with Dr Louise Newson at her ground-breaking menopause clinic – Newson Health - in Stratford Upon Avon.

Petra Coveney created Menopause Yoga© after many years of research following her own experience of peri and post menopause in her 40s, and the impact that this hormone imbalance can have on a woman’s body, mind and emotions.

She runs workshops, retreats and one-to-one sessions for women going through menopause that combine knowledge from both eastern and western traditions, medical science and complementary therapies and include specially adapted yoga poses, breathing techniques, meditation. It also includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that have been proven by the British Menopause Society to be effective in alleviating menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety and panic attacks.

Petra says her training module aims to: "Educate and Empower women to Embrace menopause’ as an opportunity to take a pause for self-study and learn what our changing body needs as we transition to this next stage in life.”

Her mantra is to ‘Nurture and Nourish’ yourself through these changes and enjoy learning new ways of eating, exercising, breathing, thinking, caring for yourself and connecting with women’s support networks.

On this module, you’ll learn specially adapted yoga, pranayama and meditation, Qi Gong breathwork, Mindfulness, Meditation techniques, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as well have receive information on the latest medical research on HRT and other medical approaches.There will be an overview of Ayurveda and the Vata dosha, menopause, nutrition, natural remedies, lifestyle changes and products that can support you, and your students, through menopause.

This is an interactive training that involves both Swadhyaya self-study and participation in Women’s Circle discussions providing opportunities to share your experiences as well as wisdom handed down by women through the ages.

  • Core modules include: Breathing techniques that can help reduce hot flushes and anxiety
  • Yoga poses that can help relieve fatigue and insomnia, anxiety, rage and mood swings.
  • Meditation techniques to help calm the mind.
  • Nutritional guidance for your body’s changing needs
  • Ayurveda and alternative therapies from the East
  • The latest medical research from the West
  • CBT and Mindful meditation to alleviate anxiety
  • Mental Health First Aid to support students

Petra’s MY workshops are very popular and always receive outstanding feedback. Women who attend these workshops rated them between 9-10 out of 10, with women requesting that the sessions be longer and to have more opportunities to practice with teachers where they live. This demand for local teachers motivated Petra to create this TT so that there are more teachers specialising in this style of yoga and wellbeing.

Petra says: "I am delighted to be able to offer this Menopause Yoga & Wellbeing Teacher Training with the British Wheel of Yoga. It has been developed in response to requests from women for locally based Menopause Yoga teachers, and from teachers across the UK and Europe who want to teach this where they live. I know from the emails I receive, that women say they want and need holistic support going through menopause. While some of these women are taking HRT, many are unable for medical reasons, or choose not to, and are desperately seeking alternative approaches. Women who are taking HRT say that they benefit from practising yoga and benefits from the wellbeing advice offered.

This intensive training includes 28 hours of contact time over 3 days in order to give you the time to master the yoga, breathing, CBT and meditation techniques. Trainees are also required to engage in 5 hours of online contact via Skype calls and webinar talks. There is an additional 7 hours of homework (journal writing and a lesson plan).

Outcomes:

This course is suitable for both personal development and CPD course.

On successful completion of the course, you will receive BWY accreditation and have a knowledge of Menopause Yoga and Wellbeing techniques that you can use to run workshops and classes.

You will be able to teach specific yoga, breathing and meditation, share information the latest medical research (according to BMS guidelines), and give an overview of general lifestyle changes that women can make, including nutrition and natural remedies. You will also be able to sign post them to other support services.

However, you will NOT be qualified to prescribe medication; students must always consult their doctor or a medical expert.

It will NOT qualify you to act as a nutritionist, naturopath, counsellor or give individual women advice on their specific menopausal symptoms. They should always consult a qualified practitioner in these fields of expertise.

Your role will be to Educate & Empower women by providing them with the MY toolkit that includes techniques to alleviate some of the main menopause symptoms, and you’ll act as a catalyst for them to see menopause as an opportunity for self-growth, better health and personal transformation.
