Mary Mackie is a Yoga therapist and an ex-nurse who teaches chair yoga
day courses. She was a BWY teacher trainer for many years and is on the
faculty of the Yoga United Yoga Therapy 550 hour Training. Richard has
taught Special Needs groups and the elderly in north London for many
years. and is part of the BWY Gentle Years Yoga Training developing
Chair Yoga programmes for both these populations. He also runs Chair
yoga workshop days with Yoga United.
Why this module? We feel that
there is a need among qualified yoga teachers for some more specialised
training and that this module will broaden the scope of our one day
courses. It will increase the knowledge and practical skills of those
yoga teachers who wish to offer a range of less-able groups an authentic
yoga course in a suitably adapted way. The course will also allow
students time and space to enhance their teaching under the mentorship
of Richard and Mary by developing their own invaluable course plan to
take away and a series of lessons for use in their own community.
Teaching methods: the input
from the tutors will be lectures and talks with some power-point and
video presentations; tutor-led discussions and tutor led practical
skills teaching. There will be peer group work both practical and
theory-based. As part of the course, you will meet guest speakers who
are willing to share their personal experience of living with chronic
conditions and their experience of the benefits of adaptive yoga.
Level of experience for whom this course is intended: Qualified yoga teachers of at least 1
year post-grad or professionals with special interest in this field.
