This Level 4 Certificate in Teaching Gentle Years Yoga (GYY) course uses a ‘blended learning’ model comprised of:  

UNIT 1:  42 hours (4 credits) - E-Learning theory to be done at home with interactive videos and written worksheets submitted by email, to be completed prior to 4 June or as soon as possible afterwards.

UNIT 2:  84 hours (9 credits) - Face to Face practical days on 4th-5th June at the Garioch Heritage Centre in Inverurie – to observe a GYY class, to practise chair-based yoga techniques and dharana activities and to teach the techniques face to face in small groups.  After the weekend, you will have access to a video gallery of techniques to practise at home and a chance to teach your peers online via Zoom, to be arranged later in June or July, with informal assessment and feedback.  Coursework: planning and preparing to teach a 6-week GYY course, then delivering it either face to face or online, with one session being observed/assessed by a qualified assessor.  The final assignment is to write case studies on two of your older adult students with different health conditions.

ASSESSMENTS:

To be conducted by BWY DCT Rosemary Bennett, a GYY tutor and experienced GYY Teacher who taught online GYY classes during two waves of the Research Trial.

ACHIEVEMENT:

Upon successful completion and quality assurance of the assessments for Units 1 and 2 (126 hours or 13 credits), you will be able to submit a claim for the BWYQ Level 4 Certificate in Teaching Gentle Years Yoga, a national qualification on Ofqual’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). 

You will also be placed on the Gentle Years Yoga register so that interested agencies, health commissioners and/or social prescribers will be able to locate you as one of the fully qualified Gentle Years Yoga teachers.

PREQUISITE

Level 3 Teaching Yoga qualification or equivalent (any tradition)

NATIONAL OCCUPATOINAL STANDARDS:

Adapting physical activity for older adults including adults at risk or those with disabilities (SKAEF)

SAFEGUARDING ADULTS:

Learning how to protect adults at risk when teaching in the community, residential care home or online

If you think you already have credits for a unit, you can apply for Recognised Prior Learning via an application form provided by the tutor.  

FEES:   

£660 in total is payable in full to BWY upon acceptance to the course.

VENUE:

Garioch Heritage Centre, Loco Works Rd, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire AB51 4FY is a modern venue with a large meeting room suitable for chair-based yoga, located 0.6 mile from the Inverurie railway station, a 6 minute walk.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

Railway transport is easy from Aberdeen or Inverness.   
 
Popular budget airlines flying into Aberdeen from across the UK include LoganAir and Easyjet. There is quick, direct train service between Aberdeen Airport and Inverurie every half hour or so.
 

B&B ACCOMMODATION:

Adjacent to the Garioch Heritage Centre is a modern B&B facility called The Sidings that gets great reviews.  It allows shared use of the large kitchen and lounge.  The tutor has made a block booking of several single ensuite rooms for the evenings of 3rd and 4th June.  The additional cost for attendees wanting B&B accommodation for two nights is £100  -- please contact Laura to make arrangements.

FOOD: 

Within a 1-3 minute walk, there is an Aldi, Tesco Extra and M&S Foodhall plus many restaurants, cafes and pubs nearby.  No outside food can be consumed in the Garioch Heritage Centre. If enough trainees were interested, arrangements could be made for the centre to provide a light lunch at a cost of £5 per person, but the arrangements would need to be made in May.
 
Start of Unit 1 – Ideally, you need to have completed the 42 hours prior to the unit 2 start on 4 June or as soon as possible afterwards.  Unit 1 takes 1-3 months for most people, but during lockdown some students accomplished it in 2 weeks.

Unit 2 Practical Days with tutor – 4th-5th June at the venue from 9:00 to 18:00 

The practical weekend will be followed by Zoom sessions to be arranged for later in June/July with Laura and Rosemary.  Students will then plan and deliver a 6 week course with one session to be assessed.
