Small Acts of Kindness: The British Wheel of Yoga offers free yoga classes to those in need.
While COVID-19 affects all segments of society it is particularly detrimental to those in the most vulnerable situations; those who have mental health concerns, the elderly and isolated, anyone suffering from the effects of domestic abuse, frontline staff, marginalised groups, such as ethnic minority groups and those facing job and financial insecurity.
To coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week, which for 2020 is based around the theme of kindness, we would like to offer our help. Yoga can be beneficial to both physical and mental well-being, reduce anxiety, help you stay connected and offer a breathing space from a stressful situation. We hope that in some small way this may ease a little of the suffering experienced by many at this time.
Many of our wonderful BWY Teachers have offered to give a free weekly yoga class to anyone affected at this time. The classes will be livestreamed via Zoom and no previous experience in yoga is necessary. All you need is a screen (laptop or iPad are preferable) to partake in the class, loose comfortable clothing, some floor space and a mat if you have one. Prior to the class you will need to complete a short health questionnaire which will be sent to you by the teacher. This is completely confidential and simply provides the teacher with information on any health concerns that they need to be aware of.
The British Wheel of Yoga was founded in 1965 and is the National Governing body for yoga in the UK. It is the largest membership organisation and it is renowned for its high standard of Teacher Training. The BWY is a charity and run by an elected committee, headed by Chair, Dawn Wesselby
Our Teachers would love to welcome you to one of their classes. Please have a look at the below timetable and if you are interested in any classes please get in touch with the teacher directly who will be able to give you the necessary information and get you booked on.
Classes run from the 8th June weekly and don’t worry if you have missed the start date, you will be able to join at any point. We have not put an end date to this initiative as we envisage that the need will be just as great in the aftermath of COVID-19 and that if a teacher is unable to continue we hope another will come along and step into that slot.
