Ukraine fundraiser brings in £10,000 as Yoga Stands for Peace
BWY teacher Sandra Cook’s initiative has brought together yoga communities across Scotland to raise more than £10,000 to support Ukrainians in crisis.
Under the banner Yoga Stands for Peace, BWY Scotland acting Regional Officer Sandra Cook encouraged and supported her country’s yoga community to join in raising funds towards the Disasters Emergency Committee for Ukraine Refugees.
Sandra came up with the idea of a large-scale yoga fundraiser as an immediate and heartfelt response to the Ukraine crisis.
Said Sandra: ‘I felt I had to do something. And these wonderful yoga events were a perfect example of the benefits, connections and sense of community yoga provides. We were delighted with the turnout, the enthusiasm and generosity of the students who came, and of the teachers who offered classes.’
Venues kindly provided space for the headline events which took place in Aberdeen, Ellon, Inverness as well as other yoga centres and spaces across the country.
In addition, yoga teachers from all traditions generously donated proceeds of their own classes to the cause.
The combined total for all the yoga events held so far is a staggering £10,000 and donations keep coming.
Sandra added: ‘We are so grateful to all the studios, leisure centres and halls who provided venues, and to the British Wheel of Yoga, Grampian Yoga and Yoga Scotland for their generous support. A big thank you to everyone involved.’
‘Yoga Stands for Peace has truly made its mark, demonstrating that yoga is not only a great way to get fit and to feel good, but that we are also a community with a conscience whose strength lies in the kindness of our yoga students and teachers who gave their all to this worthy cause and who chose to make a difference.’
And there is more to come! Look out for BWY Scotland’s fundraiser Poems for Peace, a collection of verse for use in yoga class teaching or reading for pleasure, is coming next. .
