Habits, Biases and Beliefs
It is a truism that
we are creatures of habit. It is estimated that almost 95 percent of our
everyday behaviour is automated and this is for a very good reason, it is
economical. The ability to form habits is deeply helpful whether it be
habits of the body or habits of behaviour; having to think of everything
as though it were the first time, every time, would be exhausting. There is a
problem though and it is this: Habits form in particular settings, and settings
tend to change over time, and we change over time so habits can get out of date
and when this occurs they no longer serve us as they once did, when this happens
we may feel either physically or emotionally unwell. This workshop
will explore the nature of habits both in body and behaviour in order to engage
with them more usefully.
A student of
over 30 years and teaching for 22, Pete originally taught Iyengar Yoga. Studies
in Osteopathy and meeting other yoga teachers changed his direction, to pursue
a more bio-mechanically friendly approach to asana. He currently teaches a
broader ‘humanistic perspective’ to make yoga more accessible to the western
mind by grounding the physical, physiological and psychological effects of
practice in a rational context.
