17th September 2022
at Draycott Memorial Hall

22/59 Integrating Chair Based students into a Mixed ability Class

Tutor: Eve DOUGLAS

Date: 17th September 2022

Time: 10:00 - 16:00

Location: Draycott Memorial Hall

Type of Event: CPD

Places Available: 24

This day is aimed at experienced teachers who have students with age-related or other medical conditions that impact on movement, specifically getting up and down from the floor, attending their mixed ability classes. The focus of the day is to demonstrate how it is possible to plan classes that integrate modifications and chair-based practices to meet the needs and expectations of all students within a mixed ability group. The content of the day is useful for anyone who wants to know more about chair-based practice and modifications, and gives a taster of the skills that can be acquired by taking further training such as the BWY Gentle Years Yoga Teacher Training level 4 course.

Integrating chair-based students into a mixed ability general yoga class

Tutor Bio

I have a unique and dynamic approach to traditional yoga teaching, bringing together attention to alignment and positioning in the practice of yoga postures, incorporating breathing and relaxation techniques for a whole body mind experience, increasing flexibility, stability, concentration and body awareness. Originally trained with the British Wheel of Yoga, I have continued my professional development studying a variety of yoga styles with many well-respected teachers from across the world. I have 20+ years of teaching experience, running weekly classes and workshops, both in local health and fitness clubs and privately for groups and individuals. In 2017 I qualified as a Diploma Course Tutor and have since been involved in running Diploma and Certificate teacher training courses, as well as the BWYT Foundation Course 1. More recently I've become involved in promoting and delivering the Gentle Years Yoga training programme and am now teaching on this course. My general classes are suitable for all levels with detailed instruction for beginners and those with less experience, with scope to extend practice and go deeper for those who want to achieve more. I enjoy working with students of all abilities, in particular older adults and students with specific needs who benefit from a gentler approach, including the Gentle Years Yoga programme and Chair-based classes. In one to one sessions and within small groups I offer more in depth tuition with appropriate modifications and assistance, to build a tailor-made practice.

Aims of the Day

1) To enhance understanding of how to integrate Chair-based students (ie: students who cannot get up and down from the floor) with mixed ability students in a general class, promoting inclusivity – with a focus on simplicity of modifications and alternatives 2) To enable participants to consider medical conditions and profiles of students who will benefit from integrated classes – and the reasons why the demand for this sort of class is growing Afternoon:

Learning Outcomes

1) Practice a range of postures and other elements of a typical general yoga class – using both chair-based and non-chair-based versions (P) 2) Recall specific examples of student profile for whom this sort of integrated class would be appropriate (C) 3) Express how they may feel relaxed and included as a chair-based participant in this integrated practice (A) 4) Create own modifications and alternatives (P) 5) Have an awareness and understanding of postures and movements that can be more challenging to teach maintaining a sense of inclusion in the class for all students and why this may be (C) 6) Express confidence in integrating learning from the day into their own teaching (A)
