Stability 1 - Exploring How The Human Body Is Able To Be Upright And Move

Led by Andrea Newman, Certified Advanced Rolfer and BWY DCT, this CPD day will help you to help your students to work safely in asana by giving cues that develop anatomical stability. Expanding your understanding of anatomy and how the human body stabilises itself in gravity will help you find language and teaching points that enable your students to find more stability in their bodies and to deepen their practice of asana. There will be a mixture of theory, discussion and practical work during the day.

Aims of the Day

To consider how the body stabilises itself when upright and in movement. To explore these anatomical and neurological control mechanisms in asana practice, informing the choosing of suitable cues to better help students to work safely and refine their practice. To consider the roles of the stabilising muscles vs. movement muscles, and the influence of perception on stability. To explore the role of bandha in being upright, and the meaning of ‘core’ stabilisation and 'feeling centred'.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session participants will be able to: 1. Explain the need for both stability and instability in the body, and appreciate the effect of intention on core stability through an asana practice. 2. Discuss the role of bandha and why we teach and practice these, considering physical, energetic and emotional aspects. 3. Describe tonic and phasic muscle function and explain the importance of timing and mindfulness in core stability. 4. Appreciate the link between stability in our physical embodied reality and in our inner world of thoughts and emotions (pancha kosha). 5. Be better able to find cues that meet students' experience of poses, to help them find increased stability and to deepen practices.
