CPD Day Yoga for Self Care

This day is inspired by the wisdom and practices of the ancient texts. Essentially the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are just useful instruction manuals on how to move, breathe and pay attention. They teach us how to listen and how to build a deeper connection with the Self. Through practice, an understanding of our deeper needs, expectations and patterning emerges. But it’s not just about self- study. The ultimate goal is freedom. Developing insight through practice ultimately leads to effortless living.
We learn and grow through direct experience as yogis. And in so doing, we can offer a relevant and authentic experience to others in our yoga classes. In this way we honour the wisdom from the ancient yoga texts.
Level of experience required: This day is suitable for teachers or for yogis who have a general familiarity with some of the practices in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
To offer the space and time for an embodied exploration of the key elements of Hatha yoga and Ashtanga yoga with the focus on self- care
To highlight the theme of self- understanding in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
To encourage a sense of compassion and understanding of our self and other selves
To inspire yoga teachers to go to the ancient texts for self- practice and for lesson planning
By the end of the morning you will be able to:
•Do a meditative vinyasa on the five elements using whole body mudras
•Do a progressive practice of Hatha Yoga Pradipika asana (back bend, forward fold, twist and inversion) with a blind fold or eyes closed
•Show an appropriate modification of each asana using props to suit your need at this time
•Express a sense of re-connection to what is present through movement, mantra and breathing
•Recognise a stronger awareness of the pranic body through asana with eyes closed
By the end of the afternoon you will be able to:
•Express a sense of empathy with and feel supported by others
•Find a comfortable seated position to suit your need at this time
•Use Simhasana, Bhramari, Ujjayi and Maha mudra with increasing sensitivity and skill
•Identify Viparita Karani as a powerful self care technique
•Express an emerging understanding of deeper needs/ expectations and patterning
•Recognise the relevance of Patanjali’s sutras and HYP in self-care/ understanding
•Be inspired to go back to the texts for personal practice and for lesson planning
