About the day

This IST day will enable participants to develop a clear understanding of mindfulness and learn its key elements.

Mindfulness practices of meditation, body scanning and movement will be experienced and a framework for personal practice provided. Participants will learn the similarities and differences of this approach compared with yoga practice, relaxation techniques, pranayama, hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Develop a deeper understanding of how mindfulness practice affects the brain and heart functions. Consider how mindfulness can be integrated into your work by assessing sustainers and drainers and other client-related issues. The day will include: discussion, asana/ movement, pair and group work, body scanning and meditation.

About the tutor

Karen Atkinson trained in the NHS and is a BWY teacher who has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. Karen has been using mindfulness techniques in the clinical setting for patients suffering with chronic pain, stress, illness, chronic fatigue, anxiety and depression for 16 years. In 2010 she founded Mindfulness UK with her colleague, Dr Maya Spencer. Together they teach mindfulness courses, including workshops specialising in integrating mindfulness into work for professionals. Karen founded York House Centre for Integrated and Complementary Medicine in Taunton, Somerset.

Teaching mindfulness at all levels, Karen offers a very hands-on, practical approach to the application and use of mindfulness practices, skills and techniques to individuals, groups and organisations. Karen lectures at Yoga Campus on the chronic pain, grief and trauma modules. She has a warm, intuitive, friendly and professional manner and she uses her extensive clinical, therapeutic experience to breathe life in to her teaching.

Other information

Please bring a vegetarian lunch to share and mats/blocks/bolsters to support your practice. Hot and cold drinks will be provided.
