Improving Concentration -raising energy, confidence and perseverance

Aims of the Morning

  1. Present and then discuss three translations of Patanjali's yoga sutra 1.30.
  2. Expand upon the nine obstacles to concentration with questionnaires and handouts.
  3. One obstacle at a time, I will facilitate a brainstorm on what yoga tools (such as asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation, affirmation, relaxation) could help overcome that obstacle. Course then focuses on overcoming fatigue, doubt and lack of perseverance.
  4. Morning focuses on overcoming doubt with confidence raising practices. 

Objectives 

  1. To have compared three translations of Patanjali's sutra 1.30 on the nine obstacles to knowledge.
  2. For participants to have considered how many, and which, of the nine obstacles affect them.
  3. To have considered, and practiced, hatha yoga postures, breathing, meditation and relaxation practices to overcome three of the main obstacles. To consider the effects that the practices have on themselves and whether they work.
  4. To learn lifestyle/life coaching advice to help students overcome each obstacle. 

Aims of the Afternoon 

  1. For the remaining 6 obstacles (lack of enthusiasm, fatigue, overindulgence, false perception, lack of perseverance, regression) one obstacle at a time, I facilitate a brainstorm on what yoga tools (such as asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation, affirmation, relaxation) could help overcome that obstacle.
  2. To overcome the obstacles of lack of energy or lack of perseverance - i.e. to practice energy raising and perseverance practices.

 Objectives 

  1. To have considered, and practiced, hatha yoga postures, breathing, meditation and relaxation practices to overcome the obstacles. To consider the effects that the practices have on themselves and whether they work.
  2. To learn lifestyle/life coaching advice to help students overcome each obstacle.
  3. To apply knowledge of the nine obstacles to teaching general yoga classes.
