About the Day

Aims of the Morning 

  • To describe and explain the anatomy and function of the head and neck
  • To describe and explain the articulation of the head and neck
  • To relate the head and neck to its connective tissue and tensegrity of the entire body 


Students will gain:

  •  An anatomical understanding of the head and neck
  • An experience of the way the head and neck moves
  • An understanding of how the head and neck works on key asanas

Aims of the Afternoon 

  • To revise the theory covered in the morning and address any questions arising
  • To encourage students to develop their kinaesthetic awareness
  • To examine the balance of weight within the body with specific reference to the head and neck


Students will:

  •  Reflect on the anatomy and movement of the head and neck
  • Develop greater subtlety within postures, movement and response to gravity mechanisms
  • Develop and in depth understanding of the articulation of the head and neck

 Teaching Material Used On The Day

  • Lap top presentation of anatomical diagrams, photos and drawings, skeleton and models to illustrate the anatomy and function of the head and neck

Methods of presenting the subject

  • Demonstration, lecture, discussion, Q & A, group work, class work, self discovery, experiential learning

Outline plan for the day

10- 11.15 introduction - explore student expectations for the day, find out their underpinning anatomical knowledge . Anatomy of the head and neck and related myofascial structures. Analysis of movement in relation to the head and neck

11.15 - 12.30 exploring the effects of head and neck through movement practices and asana

12.30 Lunch

13.30 - 14.00 Q and A revisiting principles and theory covered in the morning to consolidate understanding

14.00 - 14.45 explaining the balance of weight with specific reference to the head and neck

14.45 - 15.45 exploring that balance of weight in posture, movements and asanas

15.45 - Plenary and evaluation

Other information

This day is aimed at teachers and student teachers who have a keen interest in anatomy. There will be posture work and movement to illustrate theory, but this is largely a day of anatomical understanding.

About the Tutor

Gary has over 25 years of experience in movement physical training, anatomical study and bodywork practices. He has lectured extensively on the anatomy of Yoga in the UK, Europe and America. He is the founder of the Natural Bodies Centre in Brighton. He is committed to teach, train and encourage kinaesthetic awareness, ease of movement and efficient body use.
