Integrating a Pregnant Woman into a Yoga Class

Tutor: Wendy Teasdill

Date: 2nd February 2019

Time: 10:00 - 16:00

Location: Well House Yoga Space

Type of Event: IST Days

Places Available: 4

When a woman in your class becomes pregnant or - even more left-of-field - a woman rocks up already pregnant to your class - what do you do? Is she fine? After all, pregnancy is not an illness, for goodness' sake ... or are you slightly anxious you might not know what to do with her? Do you end up giving her so much specialist attention that the rest of the class get a little annoyed? Every pregnancy is different, every woman is an individual, but if she is at your class it would be a real shame to turn her away.

This IST day covers the main conditions of pregnancy and general guidelines regarding class management and, most importantly, deals with enhancing your yoga class through the presence of a pregnant woman. Some of the modifications for pregnancy are beneficial for everyone, and many of them can be tweaked so as to give the more ambitious participants a bit more of a challenge.

Wendy Teasdill has been practising Yoga for nearly forty years. She started with Iyengar Yoga but when, after fifteen years she became pregnant and began to throw up every time she did a downward dog - she had to find a different way. At the time she was in Hong Kong, and information was hard to come by. Through trial and error she developed a practice which sustained her through all three pregnancies - and beyond. Her style combines the stability of her Iyengar roots with a fluidity which honours the new life within - whatever the accompanying conditions. Wendy has been teaching pregnancy yoga since 1993 and she feels that she has learnt more from teaching pregnant women than in any other area. She teaches the pregnancy yoga module for the British Wheel of Yoga and has written `Yoga for Pregnancy' (Gaia Books).

This day is designed to be informative, fun, interactive and experiential. You will receive a substantial amount of paper handouts. Bring a large exercise ball if you have one, and a belt will be helpful. But if you just turn up with a mat you are most welcome.
